April Newsletter 2025

Recent headlines have painted a dramatic picture on the global stage, reminding us that the world of drinks is never far from geopolitical currents. In a courageous twist of trade tactics, the European Union has dropped plans to target American bourbon with retaliatory tariffs after intense lobbying by countries like Ireland, France, and Italy. This move—intended to safeguard export interests—has been welcomed as a subtle reminder that our shared passion can help defuse the heat of trade wars.

At the same time, Trump’s threat to impose eye-watering tariffs of up to 200% on European wine, Champagne, and other spirits if the EU proceeds with its proposed whiskey tax has added another chapter to this evolving drama. While these headlines might seem heavy, they remind us that the wines and spirits we cherish have a deep, resilient history of weathering storms.

A Bold Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Kinsale Mead Co., Ireland’s first new meadery in 200 years, has once again pushed the boundaries of mead-making with their latest creation: the Miskey range. This pioneering series marries the ancient art of mead with the rich heritage of Irish whiskey, resulting in a trio of semi-sweet, gluten-free meads, each at 12% ABV.kinsalemeadco.ie

The Miskey meads are aged in Irish whiskey casks, including those from the renowned Midleton Distillery, infusing them with nuanced flavours that reflect both the honeyed origins of mead and the robust character of whiskey. As Kinsale Mead Co. aptly describes, it’s “less of the burn, more of the buzz”.

This innovative approach not only honours traditional mead-making but also introduces a contemporary twist that appeals to modern palates. Whether you’re a seasoned mead enthusiast or new to this historic beverage, the Miskey range offers a unique tasting experience that bridges the gap between past and present.
