Q&A with Michelle Lawlor, Founder of The Nude Wine Co

Tell us about your current role?

As the founder of The Nude Wine Co., my role is incredibly varied. From curating the best wines for our customers, and managing the day-to-day operations, to building relationships with vineyards and wine producers. I’m also deeply involved in creating content and educating people about wine, which I love.

How did you first get into the drinks industry?

I had a job as a weekend sales assistant for Oddbins which I loved. I pivoted my radio career to wine.

What is your favourite part about working in the industry?

The people! From winemakers who pour their heart into every bottle to customers discovering new wines, it’s all about connection. I also love the travel aspect—visiting incredible wine regions, experiencing different cultures, and meeting such cool and interesting people along the way. And there’s always great music in the background somewhere, which just adds to the overall vibe of the wine industry. It’s all about sharing these moments and stories.

We’re meeting up for a drink after work – what are you having?

Something Portuguese! It’s my favourite wine region at the minute.

You can only have one drink for the rest of your life, what’s in your glass?

Chardonnay, all day, every day please!

It’s Saturday night, what restaurant are you going to?

I’m all about supporting local, so I’d go to one of the great wine bars in Dublin where they serve good wine and small plates, perfect for a relaxed night out.

Is there a bucket list drink you want to try, or a dream drink destination you’d love to visit?

I am lucky to have travelled and worked in the drinks industry globally, but am yet to visit the wine regions of California.

What is the most memorable experience of your career?

A two-week wine trip in Australia in 2011, we visited Hunter Valley, Orange, Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Yarra Valley, and Mornington Peninsula. It was a life-changing experience.

One thing you’d like to see more of in the drinks industry?

Professional business and sales training.

Any particular women you admire in the industry?

Gaia Gaja is such an inspiration in the wine world because she’s all about pushing boundaries while staying true to her roots. As a fifth-generation winemaker at the legendary Gaja winery in Piedmont, Italy, she’s managed to balance tradition with innovation in a way that’s really rare.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a career in the industry?

Follow your passion, but remember that wine knowledge alone isn’t everything. Developing strong business skills and building a solid network are just as important. The wine industry is ever-evolving, and while there’s always something new to learn about wine, having the ability to grow a business and foster connections is what will really set you apart.
