Jules Mak to Launch Fuoco in Ranelagh as Mak Evolves After 14 Years to a Premium Takeaway Concept

Mak at D6 chef and owner, Jules Mak has announced the closure of the Ranelagh restaurant staple after an incredibly successful 14 years in business. Mak will move to a new home in the neighbourhood, transitioning to a takeaway-focused format and making way for Jules’ latest venture, Fuoco, an Italian, Mediterranean-inspired concept set to open in the reimagined Ranelagh space.

An institution in the Dublin food scene, Mak landed with a bang in 2012 as a premium Chinese restaurant with Hong Kong-style Dim Sum, authentic cuisine, and curated cocktails to complement every dish, all in the high-energy heart of Ranelagh. Growing up in the restaurant industry, Jules made his own way from chef to business owner and credits Mak with laying the foundations for what would be a successful and adventurous career.

From Mak came Wanderlust in Dalkey, Hush in Rathmines, Mak at Zozimus and current hotspot Parrilla in Ranelagh, proving the second-generation restaurateur is unafraid to evolve, experiment, and push forward. Today, Jules continues to build on that legacy with the same energy and ambition that defined Mak with a series of changes focused on keeping the journey moving forward.

Opening Mak at just 24 years old changed my life and taught me lessons I could never have imagined. It’s been a journey that has taught me to drive on, to be brave, to have fun with it; when to take a leap, when to sit steady, and everything in between. The experiences I’ve had with Mak have been completely formative for me and I’m so proud of its success, but now it’s time for a new chapter and a new leap that the team and I are extremely excited for’.

Jules’ bold move to change the format of one restaurant to make room for something new stems from careful analysis of market trends and optimism for a new adventure in a constantly changing industry. While the Mak, as people know it, will be closing, for fans of the food, it is not goodbye, just see you at home, as Mak moves fully to a takeaway format in the Ranelagh neighbourhood, with ambitious plans to expand the Mak brand further in the future.

Into the former Mak space now comes a brand new concept with the opening of Fuoco later this year, following a full refurbishment of the premises. An Italian-inspired, Mediterranean-style concept with a strong focus on fresh food, exceptional wine, and an atmospheric dining experience, Fuoco will offer something distinctively fresh to the neighbourhood. Jules has worked to establish an impressive team set to bring Fuoco to life, from chefs and managers to sommeliers and mixologists, all experts in their respective fields and a testament to the depth of bonds built over 14 years in the industry. For Jules and the team, this opening marks both an evolution and a homecoming, one that is rooted in ambition, energy, and a continued spirit of adventure.

Mak at D6 Restaurant will close on 24th May 2026, with Mak takeaway launching in Ranelagh Summer 2026. For final restaurant bookings call (01) 406 0006.
