“I was delighted to join Wine Spirit Women as we headed to the Wines Direct Headquarters in Mullingar for a special tasting of some of their new wines. What a fantastic showroom for their treasures! The HQ in Mullingar has a beautiful display of wines, and a fantastic selection of complementary and artisanal products such as cheese, oils, cookbooks, wine glasses and openers, etc.
With their passion for wine and its story at the fore, Wines Direct sources directly from the producers and the wines they stock are unique in Ireland. We were treated not only to a tasting of several of their gorgeous wine offerings but also some of the local cheeses, pates and condiments.

While I was blown away by all the delicious wines, here are my favourites from the day:
Domaine Jousset “Exile” Blanc, Petillant. Made in the Loire Valley, this 50/50 blend of Chenin Blanc grapes from the Loire, and Colombard grapes from the Southwest, breaks all those rigid AOP rules and is therefore bottled as a Vin de France. But don’t let this generic labelling put you off! This lively, zippy, frothy delight is a joy to drink and a perfect way to kick off any celebration. Cheers! 🥂
La Soufrandiere “La Carbonnode” is crafted from Chardonnay from the Saint Veran commune of the Maconnais that has undergone carbonic maceration. Hence it is also bottled as Vin de France. It boasts an incredible round and rich mouthfeel and the aromas of orange peel and quince zing around the palate, especially when combined with the luscious Epoisses cheese from the same region. I’m still thinking about it. Perfection!
Domaine de Jonc Blanc “Fruit” is a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend from Bergerac in Southwest France. Organically and biodynamically produced, this wine is fresh, fruity and brimming with energy. Delicious!
